Newsnight poll suggests gay couples should be allowed to adopt children

Almost two-thirds of people believe gay couples should be allowed to adopt children, according to a poll commissioned by Newsnight.

The ICM poll to be broadcast on Newsnight, tonight at 10.30pm on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two, found that 64% of those polled believed gay couples should be allowed to adopt, as opposed to 32% who said they should not. Of those that thought they should, 70% were female compared to 57% who were male.

Asked if gay male couples should be able to adopt children, 55% of those polled answered that they should while 42% responded against. Of the 55%, the percentage of females who answered that they should was higher – 60% compared to 49% of males.

Those polled were also asked the same question relating specifically to gay female couples.

Fifty nine per cent answered that they should be able to adopt children and 38% thought they should not. Of those who answered in the positive 63% were female and 55% male.

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,004 adults aged 18 and over, by telephone between 24 and 25 January 2007. Interviews were conducted across the country and the results have been weighted to the profile of all adults. ICM is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
