成人论坛 SSO links across the world for a short ride in a fast machine

Combining state-of-the-art video-conferencing technology and musical expertise, the 成人论坛 Scottish Symphony Orchestra will beam legendary composer John Adams directly into its home at Glasgow City Halls as part of a worldwide masterclass on Wednesday 31 January.

Devised in association with the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom John Adams has a short residency, both orchestras will use their unique video-conferencing technologies to deliver one of the greatest modern composers live to students from Glasgow to New York.

Adams - one of the most acclaimed composers of the late 20th century and famous for the pulsating rhythms of Short Ride In A Fast Machine - is in London for a performance of this popular work and for a week long residency with the LSO at the Barbican.

Students from Glasgow University and Glasgow secondary schools will join the video-conference from the 成人论坛 SSO's home at Glasgow City Halls, with John Adams participating live from the LSO centre at St Luke's, London.

Also participating in the masterclass are students from, Leeds, Bangor, York and the Eastman School of Music, New York.

The 成人论坛 SSO and LSO are the only orchestras in the UK to use this technology as part of their music education programmes, utilising video conferencing to connect with schools and universities to learn from leading musicians, conductors and composers.

The 成人论坛 SSO successfully launched its programme of music masterclasses via video conference to schools across Scotland in December, and on Monday 29 January it aided the National Youth Choir of Scotland in successfully auditioning prospective members in Orkney and Stornoway.

The choir were concerned that young singers living in the remoter parts of Scotland might think twice about applying because of the cost and difficulty involved in travelling to auditions.

Christopher Bell, Director of the choir, said: "I'm very pleased - the technology didn't get in the way of the audition at all, and the sound through the video link more than matched the sound of the candidates' CDs.

"I'm confident that this technology really does make it possible for all young Scottish singers to apply no matter where they live."
