Promoting African talent is my passion, says Jan Malan, stage producer of ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Africa Radio Awards


The gritty world of news collides with the flamboyant world of entertainment when Jan Malan, one of the leading show producers in Africa, stages the finals of the first ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Africa Radio Awards competition in Nairobi, Kenya on 26 May.

Namibian–born Jan has staged groundbreaking fashion, lifestyle and music events in Africa and across the world for stage and television, and is thrilled to be producing his first ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ event.

"I grew up listening to the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ as a boy so I am honoured to be involved in this inspirational awards show," says Jan.

"I am particularly excited because promoting African talent is my passion – anything that brings African dreams and skills to an international stage.Ìý I plan to bring the energy and synergy from the events I am known for staging to make this a memorable occasion.

"I have arranged for leading African designers, Sun Goddess, who are the husband and wife team, Thando and Vanya Mangaliso, to create unique designs specifically for this occasion. Their designs will be worn by selected individuals on and off the stage."

Vera Kwakofi, Project Manager of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Africa Radio Awards, adds: "Jan embodies the very essence of what this competition is about – celebrating the best of African talent.Ìý He has dedicated his career to bringing the best that Africa has to offer to an international audience which is why I am delighted he is playing a central role."

Jan has been instrumental in the nurturing of African talent throughout the years. In the late Nineties he conceptualised and spearheaded the Face Of Africa Model Search – the first ever international search for an African supermodel.Ìý The competition winner, Oluchi, went on to become the first black model to grace the covers of Italian Vogue.

Jan also pioneered the Africa Designs fashion designer initiative at New York Fashion Week, for the first time giving African designers the opportunity to showcase their talents on an international stage.Ìý A much televised, international highlight for Jan was the Models Walking On Water fashion show for Tyra Banks' America's Next Top Model show.

Jan is the Creative Director for the Positive Rocks gala event to take place in Sun City in June.Ìý It draws together music, art, fashion and food to raise funds for the Tapologo Aids Hospice in the North West Province of South Africa.

The ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Africa Radio Awards celebrates the excellence of radio journalism across Africa.Ìý The finals will be held on Saturday 26 May 2007 at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.Ìý

Hosted by ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ producer and presenter, Komla Dumor, the evening will feature live performances from Nigerian rapper 2Face Idibia, South African vocalist Thandiswa Mazwai and Kenyan newcomer Valerie Kimani.

Trophies presented will recognise the best Radio Station of the Year, New Radio Station of the Year, News Journalist of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year, Local On Air Campaign of the Year, Interactive/Talk Show of the Year and Young Broadcaster of the Year.
