A double launch for The Big Welsh Challenge
|
³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Wales' The Big Welsh Challenge is planning a double celebration at the National Eisteddfod in Flintshire.
Ìý
On Saturday 4 August, the online interactive video course and a brand new mentoring scheme for Welsh learners will be officially launched with a treasure hunt around the Maes.
Ìý
The challenge will kick off at 2pm when learners are invited to collect their page of clues from the Welsh Learners' Tent and set off in search of their treasure.
Ìý
The hunt is open to people with all standards of Welsh, from beginners to fluent Welsh speakers who would like to help support learners.
Ìý
At 4pm the treasure hunters return to the Welsh Learners' Tent in time for The Big Welsh Challenge launch. ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Wales' Head of Education and Learning Eleri Wyn Williams will be joined by celebrity mentor Glyn Wise to present the interactive Welsh course.
Ìý
Based around a soap-opera style drama, this ground-breaking resource also allows users to brush up on their language skills in web-based sessions with tutors, including Glyn Wise and Dewi Pws who co-presents the TV programme.
Ìý
The celebrity learners taking part in The Big Welsh Challenge have individual help from their mentors: Rhod Gilbert has been paired with Cerys Mathews; Simon Weston with Ray Gravell; Colin Charvis with Rebecca Evans; Di Botcher with Glyn Wise; and Lowri Turner with Iolo Williams.
Ìý
Now other Welsh learners will have the chance to benefit from the same type of support from Welsh speakers with The Big Welsh Challenge Mentoring Scheme.
Ìý
A special pack has been produced containing material to support mentors and learners, including a cookbook with recipes from The Big Welsh Challenge celebrity team written in simple Welsh and designed to improve language skills.
Ìý
These packs have been developed with support from the Welsh Language Board and are intended for use by mentors and learners working together. The project is now appealing for Welsh speakers who can devote a small amount of time to become a mentor.
Ìý
"This is a really exciting occasion for us," says Eleri Wyn Williams. "We've had fantastic comments from Welsh learners who've already had the chance to try out our online course and we're in the process of producing additional units which will be available soon.
Ìý
"We're also delighted to launch our mentoring scheme, which we believe will prove rewarding for mentors and learners alike."
