|
- MistaJam promoted to five days a week
- Key specialist DJs take over 10pm slot
Ìý
1Xtra announced today a series of changes to the mainstream and specialist schedule, as DJs Trevor Nelson and Tim Westwood joined the digital radio revolution with new shows on the network.
Ìý
In further news, UK hip hop specialist MistaJam takes over a new five-day slot.
Ìý
The refreshed schedule reflects an evolution of 1Xtra's music priorities and has been designed to ensure the station continues to champion the most important black music.
Ìý
The changes kick off on 10 September with the specialist schedule:
Ìý
- MistaJam hosts a new cross genre show featuring the best in underground flavours plus the big hits, mixes, live music and charts.
- House DJ Footloose and hip hop specialist Sarah Love will be joining the station for new mix shows.
- From 10 each night, 1Xtra will have the big hitters in specialist music – Ronnie Herel, Robbo Ranx, Bailey, Target and Semtex – representing the very best in RnB, Dancehall, Drum & Bass, UKG and hip hop.
- Crissy Criss is promoted to an earlier slot on Monday nights, midnight-2am.
Ìý
On 8 October the daytime and weekend schedules change:
Ìý
- Trevor Nelson hosts a brand new breakfast show. Trevor will be joined by new signing Zena, as the show shifts to an 8-11am slot. Great music, big entertainment and the best celebrity guests will all be in the mix.
- Westwood presents a new hip hop show exclusive to 1Xtra, Sunday nights, 10pm-midnight. Both Westwood and Nelson will continue to present their shows on sister station ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 1.
- Dev is promoted from his weekend show to the early breakfast show, 6-8am weekdays.
- Max takes over a new afternoon show, 2-4pm, mixing news, music, entertainment and debate.
- Twin B gains two new shows on Saturday and Sunday mornings, 6-9am.
- Ronnie Herel gains a new Saturday chart show (1-4pm) and a Sunday show (1-4pm).
Andy Parfitt, Controller, Radio 1 and 1Xtra, said: "This is chapter two for 1Xtra as we continue to grow the station. We have the cream of DJ talent showcasing the best black music around and in Trevor and Tim Westwood, the two biggest players in RnB and hip hop.
Ìý
"It is important that UK digital radio grows for all audiences, including the young – this evolution of the station is a critical part of building awareness and audiences to digital. It's key that the schedule is as easy as possible for our audience to navigate so they can find the music they love and I believe we have achieved that."
Ìý
Lorna Clarke, Head of Programmes, 1Xtra, said: "Over the past five years 1Xtra has demonstrated that there is a huge appetite for UK and international black music. We've continued in our commitment to delivering the best content to our listeners and our refreshed schedule reflects this.
Ìý
"We're excited that Trevor Nelson and Tim Westwood, two of the UK's leaders in bringing black music to a mainstream audience, will be joining us appealing to an even wider audience. I'd like to thank the DJs leaving the station for all their hard work and wish them well for the future."
Ìý
Trevor Nelson said: "It makes total sense for me to be joining 1Xtra. I've been at the forefront of black music at Radio 1 and this opportunity was too good for me to pass up. It's the flagship breakfast show on the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s dedicated black music station. I'm looking forward to being a permanent part of the 1Xtra team."
Ìý
Tim Westwood said: "1Xtra have made a tremendous contribution to black music over the last five years. I'm very proud and excited to be part of such a great station."
Ìý
MistaJam said: "I'm really looking forward to moving to five days a week with my new show on the greatest black music station on the planet – 1Xtra – and while it will be different to my previous shows on the network, I'll be able to build on my two years being a part of the 1Xtra family with the new show.
Ìý
"I'll be spotlighting a blend of some of the freshest black music around from all of 1Xtra's key genres from both sides of the Atlantic – some you'll know, some you'll get to know. It will also be a guide to everything that's hot in the 1Xtra universe: music, gadgets, film, TV, club nights, clothes!
Ìý
"I'm honoured that 1Xtra has offered me the show and am humbled to be a key part of the next phase of 1Xtra. It's gonna be big!!"
