A Christian calling – to have some fun

Does God like sex? Or is he a killjoy in the bedroom department?

Ìý

That's the debate Stan and Stella Hegarty have been having with their church, their own consciences and the wider Christian community after launching their website WhollyLove, an online sex aid shop and advice line.

Ìý

Stan and Stella, from Bridgend, are firmly of the opinion, espoused on their website, that sex within heterosexual marriage has been designed by God. "At its best, within this context, it is pure and right – there is nothing bad or dirty about it and it should be enjoyed – often!" they say.

Ìý

But convincing others of this line is proving difficult, as The Missionary Position (Wednesday 13 February, ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One Wales), which follows the couple through a year of their promotional campaign, shows.

Ìý

Choosing the goods to sell on the site is the first hurdle. The sex industry is big business and trying to find goods which are not promoting sex aids with pornographic pictures or as something sinful (complete with no-no devilish horns) is hard going. And there are tough judgement calls to be made – air hostess and nurses outfits are in, but not police officers, as a truncheon is deemed "too S&M".

Ìý

Spreading the word with their missionary zeal sees Stella and Stan dividing the camps, sometimes meeting with a stony silence, or sometimes sparking a heated debate about whether Christianity is compatible with good sex.

Ìý

Still, believing they have had a calling from God to set up the site – Stan says he was urged by God to do it while he was painting the decking one day - keeps the couple from giving in, even though the site has not exactly taken off just yet.

Ìý

It seems it is not the site that is at fault – around 40% of their clients are clergy – but the fact that everyone is staying silent about its merits. So far, though the feedback is that people like it, no-one will come out openly and support them.

Ìý

As they approach the second anniversary of WhollyLove, can the couple carry on converting others, or will they be ready to fall by the wayside?
