Martin Shaw returns as George Gently
|
Following the success of his first television outing last year, George Gently is back with two gripping new cases for µþµþ°äÌý°¿²Ô±ð, adapted for the screen by Peter Flannery (Our Friends In The North) and Mick Ford (William And Mary) from the George Gently series of novels by Alan Hunter.
Ìý
Martin Shaw reprises his role as Inspector George Gently, whose impassioned investigations reveal the dark underbelly of a society on the cusp of change. The dramas are set in 1964 Northumberland.
Ìý
Martin Shaw is joined once again by Lee Ingleby (Wind In The Willows) who stars as the ambitious Detective Sergeant John Bacchus. Guest stars Tim Healy (Auf Wiedersehen Pet) and Robert Glenister (Hustle) complete the stellar cast.
Ìý
The first of the two self-contained dramas is Bomber's Moon, which sees Gently and Bacchus investigating the death of Gunter Schmeikel, a returning German POW whose body is found in the harbour of a small fishing village.
Ìý
The case uncovers both present violence and past grievances as Gently and Bacchus explore Schmeikel's wartime connections – including those to locals Jim Hardyment (Tim Healy) and Robert Stratton (Kevin Doyle).
Ìý
A thrilling race against time ensues as Gently and Bacchus attempt to discover the identity of the mystery killer before anyone else perishes.
Ìý
The second film, The Burning Man, sees the badly burnt body of an unidentified man draw Gently and Bacchus into the shadowy world of IRA gun-running, and into direct opposition with ruthless Special Branch officer Superintendent Empton (Robert Glenister).
Ìý
The impressionable Bacchus is intrigued by Empton's harsh interrogation technique, but Gently is suspicious of his motives.
Ìý
With their victim identified as a prominent IRA member and marksman in the Border Campaign, Gently's subsequent pursuit of justice leads to a tense showdown with all guns blazing.
Ìý
Writer and executive producer Peter Flannery says: "Martin and Lee brought real depth, warmth, and humour to Gently and Bacchus in the first adaptation, so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to adapt further stories for them.
Ìý
"It's also a flattering tribute that the drama has attracted guest stars of the calibre of Tim Healy and Robert Glenister."
Ìý
Polly Hill, ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Commissioning Editor of Independent Drama, says: "I'm delighted that George Gently is returning to µþµþ°äÌý°¿²Ô±ð, bringing back the wonderful partnership of Gently and Bacchus and solving more compelling investigations."
