Inside Out: an unsolved Bradford murder
|
One of Britain's leading investigative writers believes an unsolved murder – which became the centre of a major miscarriage of justice – could be the work of the Yorkshire Ripper.
Ìý
David Yallop, author of the international bestseller In God's Name, The Power And The Glory and Deliver Us from Evil – a book about the Ripper – says in Inside Out on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One Yorkshire & Lincolshire that he believes Peter Sutcliffe could have killed 20-year-old Carol Wilkinson in Bradford in October 1977.
Ìý
He says: "I think there is a strong probability that Sutcliffe was responsible on this."
Ìý
The programme, which can be seen at 7.30pm on Wednesday 24ÌýSeptember, describes how local man, Anthony Steel, was orginally convicted for the murder following a confession – which he later retracted.
Ìý
In 2003, after 20 years behind bars and five years on license, the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction as unsafe and Steel walked free. But he died last year aged 52.
Ìý
Peter Sutcliffe was convicted of 13 murders over five years and remains in prison.
Ìý
David Yallop says: "The evidence that Sutcliffe is likely to be the person responsible is so much stronger than the evidence that Anthony Steel was condemned on, it cries out to be investigated.
Ìý
"You are dealing with one of the saddest and most significant miscarriages of justice in this country since the Second World War."
