On Saturday 18 April the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Scottish Symphony Orchestra premieres Mark-Anthony Turnage's Five Views Of A Mouth, a work based on Samuel Beckett's seminal monologue Not I, which will be performed as part of the concert by one of Britain's leading actresses, Fiona Shaw.
As well as an eclectic array of film credits that include the Academy Award winning My Left Foot and, more recently, as Aunt Petunia from the popular Harry Potter series, Fiona Shaw is an actress widely celebrated for her performances in Beckett's work, most recently in a feted revival of his play Happy Days.
Written especially for the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ SSO and its Chief Conductor Ilan Volkov, Five Views Of A Mouth was composed specifically for performance in the atmospheric surroundings of Glasgow's Old Fruitmarket.
This set of five etudes, commissioned by ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Radio 3 for the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ SSO, is scored for amplified solo flute and orchestra.
The title refers to the central character in Not I, in which Fiona Shaw's mouth, spotlit in the darkness, delivers a high velocity verbal stream of consciousness hinting at memories of past traumas.
In Turnage's work, the movement titles refer directly to Beckett's monologue and the solo flute part, performed by Dietmar Wiesner in a non-verbal setting of the text.
