A World Away follows amateur sailors preparing to sail around world

A special half-hour programme on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One Yorkshire and Lincolnshire this Sunday will follow the fortunes of an amateur sailing crew as they prepare to sail in a unique race around the world.

A World Away, which can be seen at 10.20pm on Sunday 13 September, joins the crew of the Hull And Humber clipper – one of 10 yachts in the Clipper Round the World yacht race.

Executive Producer Mark Hayman said: "The Clipper is the only round-the-world-race for amateurs and the crew of the Hull And Humber is made up of people who have paid to go around the world – in some cases they have given up their jobs and one man has cashed in his pension to pay for the experience.

"This is a huge life change and amazing experience for all the people on board and we follow their exploits as they prepare to leave dry land for up to 10 months and see how they cope with getting their sea-legs, living 24/7 in cramped conditions with people they have never met before and leaving behind friends and family."

The Clipper Race leaves Hull this Sunday at 2.00pm and calls at ports such as Rio De Janeiro, Cape Town, Singapore and Jamaica before arriving back in Hull in July next year.

Presented by Damian Johnson, Sunday's documentary also features an interview with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston CBE, the first man to sail around the world single-handed, and interviews with race ambassadors – unemployed teenagers who are given a chance to sail a leg.

Finally, the programme will also show the race start in Hull as families wave goodbye.
