Tom Giles appointed as new Editor of Panorama

Tom Giles has been appointed as the new Editor of Panorama, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s flagship current affairs series.

He will take over the post in mid-March.

The appointment comes after the former Editor, Sandy Smith, was announced as the new Executive Editor for The One Show.

Tom started his ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ career in 1991 as an Assistant Producer for World Service Radio.

He has since worked on the Nine O'clock News, Newsnight, Panorama, Horizon and, for Current Affairs, on series such as Hooligans and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Two's White Season and ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s factual drama development.

While on Newsnight he also produced Peter Snow's 1997 election coverage, as well as Jeremy Paxman's infamous interview with Michael Howard in the same year.

Tom is currently an Executive Producer for ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ Current Affairs and has been responsible for some of Panorama's high-profile undercover investigations such as Hate On The Doorstep, which exposed racist abuse on a housing estate in Bristol.

His In The Line Of Fire, about the friendly-fire incident in the Iraq War involving his team and the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s World Affairs Editor, John Simpson, won the RTS International Current Affairs award in 2004.

He has also produced ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ landmark series – winning a Bafta for Andrew Marr's History Of Modern Britain and, more recently, overseeing The British Family, presented by Kirsty Young.

Tom Giles said: "I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead one of the greatest brands in British TV journalism and delighted to able to put something back into a programme which has enabled me to do so many things.

"It's still right at the heart of the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One schedule and – with 48 half-hour and eight hour-slots a year – it's a fantastic opportunity to really make a difference."

Stephen Mitchell, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s Deputy Director of News and Head of Programmes, said: "Panorama is one of our key flagship programmes and it will be in safe and creative hands with Tom."

Clive Edwards, the ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳'s Executive Editor and Commissioning Editor for TV Current Affairs, said: "I am very pleased to announce that Tom Giles has been appointed as the editor of Panorama.

"Tom is an extremely experienced executive and producer who has been responsible for some of the most outstanding current affairs output of the past few years.

"He has fantastic energy, ideas and proven commission-winning abilities and he will be a great leader for Panorama ensuring that the series continues at the very top of its form."

Notes to Editors

Panorama is the world's longest-running investigative TV show and broadcasts on ³ÉÈËÂÛ̳ One.

It has achieved critical acclaim for programmes including Britain's Homecare Scandal and its Primark investigation.

Recent programmes have included What Happened To Baby P? and I Helped My Daughter Die, in which Panorama cameras followed Kay Gilderdale – the woman at the centre of the recent assisted suicide trial – as she faced a possible life sentence over her part in the death of her daughter, Lynn.
