Terms and Conditions

1. The 成人论坛’s Code of Conduct for competitions and votes and the 成人论坛’s Terms of Use apply to this award.
2. The 成人论坛 is the organiser of this award.
Eligibility
3. The award is not open to employees, agents or contractors of the 成人论坛 and Hands Up for Trad, or their immediate families or any other person connected or involved with the award.
4. The award is only open to individual musicians who fulfil all of the following requirements:
- Entrants must be aged between 18 and 27 (inclusive) as of 4th August 2024; and
- Entrants must currently reside in Scotland and must have resided in Scotland for at least 1 year immediately prior to 4 August 2024.
5. To enter the award, entrants must submit:
- a 10 minute recording of themselves playing traditional Scottish music;
- a short written biography of their traditional music experience; and
- a list of songs/tunes submitted and any relevant details of their source/background.
6. Entries must be made online at /youngtrad.
7. The award opens on Thursday 4th July 2024 at 20:00. Entries received before this date will not be considered.
8. Closing time for entries is 23:59 on Sunday 4th August 2024. Submissions received after this time will not be considered. Entries will not be returned so please remember to keep a copy. If you want to withdraw your application please contact Helen Needham (Helen.Needham@bbc.co.uk).
9. Entrants can only enter individually. Entries from bands will not be accepted. Only one entry per person is permitted. If you submit more than one entry, only the first entry received will be considered.
10. Entries must not contain any defamatory, offensive or any other material which the 成人论坛, in its sole discretion, may deem unsuitable. Entries must be suitable to be broadcast by the 成人论坛 to audiences of all ages.
11. Entrants retain all rights in their entries but grant to the 成人论坛 a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual licence to broadcast their entry across all media (including use in all medial now known or which may hereafter become known), including use on any online platforms.
12. Entrants warrant that they have obtained all rights necessary to grant the 成人论坛 the licence as set out in clause 11 above, and that their entry does not infringe the rights of any other party. The 成人论坛 accepts no liability if entrants ignore these rules and entrants agree to fully indemnify the 成人论坛 against any claims by any third party arising from any breach of these Terms and Conditions.
13. Entrants permit the 成人论坛 to edit or change entries in any way it may, in its sole discretion, consider necessary for the purposes of use in the award and the uses set out in clause 11 and 15.
14. By entering the award, entrants warrant that they have legal capacity to enter the competition and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.
15. A selection of entries may be broadcast or used online throughout the competition. A selection of entrants may also be interviewed by the 成人论坛 and these interviews may also be broadcast or used on-line. This will not be a part of, or have any influence on, the judging process.
16. Entries will be judged on the following four criteria:
- Technical Range & Accuracy
- Performance & Communication
- Musicality and Ornamentation
- Choice of Programme
17. Entries will be judged through the following process:
Round One
A panel of judges will review all entries and select a shortlist of 12 entrants to take part in the semi-finals, based on the criteria set out above.
Semi-finals
The 12 shortlisted entrants will be contacted by Sunday 1 September and announced officially on Thursday 5 September 2024. If a shortlisted entrant cannot be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made to do so, the organisers reserve the right to offer the place in the semi-final to the next best entrant.
Semi-finals will take place on Sunday 13 October at 成人论坛 Scotland Headquarters, Pacific Quay with rehearsals on site on 11 and 12 October 2024.
All semi-finalists will be asked to perform in a semi-finals concert. Highlights of this event will be broadcast on ‘Travelling Folk’ on Radio Scotland and filmed for later broadcast on 成人论坛 Alba. They will be judged by a panel of judges who will select the 6 finalists based on the criteria set out above.
The Final
Finals will take place on Sunday 2nd February 2025 at 成人论坛 Scotland Headquarters, Pacific Quay with rehearsals on site two days preceding that.
Finalists will be required to perform for 10 minutes and this should include any spoken introductions. A professional rhythm section will be provided.
The organisers will provide accommodation and rail travel for each finalist.
The final will be broadcast live on 成人论坛 Radio Scotland and on 成人论坛 Alba and each finalist will be asked to perform in front of a panel of judges. The panel of judges will select one winner based on the criteria set out above. Judges use a scoring system out of 10 per criteria. This score will be used as a guide. However, the winner is ultimately decided on the basis of panel discussion and a majority agreement. In the event of a deadlock, the chair of the judges will have the casting vote.
Finalists may not repeat any repertoire performed in semi-final round.
Award Prize
18. The prize for the winner will consist of:
- The title of ‘成人论坛 Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2025’. The title should be used in full on any print publicity and not abbreviated;
- A recording session and appearance on Radio Scotland’s ‘Travelling Folk’;
- Winner’s performance at next year’s 成人论坛 Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician event;
- An opportunity performance at the Scots Trad Music Awards; and
- One year's membership of Musicians Union.
All finalists will receive a one year membership of the TMSA and the opportunity to take part in the annual TMSA Young Trad Tour (subject to any necessary contracts being entered into with the relevant parties).
19. The prize is as stated and cannot be deferred or transferred. There will be no cash alternatives.
20. The names of each entrant whose entry is broadcast or used on-line will be made public. Entrants must agree to take part in any post-award publicity, if required.
21. The organisers’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
General
22. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any entry which breaches any of these Terms and Conditions or to withhold or withdraw a prize if, in its opinion, entries do not reach the required standard.
23. To the extent permitted by law, the 成人论坛 will not be liable for any loss or damage (whether such damage or losses were foreseen, foreseeable, known or otherwise) including financial, reputational loss or disappointment.
24. Entrants are reminded that their participation in 成人论坛 competitions (including winning or receiving a highly commended award) cannot be used in commercial advertising or promotions, to attract external funding, to lobby or campaign, or to attract donations.
25. The 成人论坛 reserves the right to: (i) amend these terms and conditions; (ii) disqualify any entrant who breaches the rules, has acted fraudulently in any way or who has brought the 成人论坛 into disrepute (in its sole discretion) and; (iii) where applicable, disqualify any applicant or withdraw or substitute any prize or award, should any applicant, winner at any stage exhibit inappropriate or dangerous behaviour (including, but not limited to being under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or chemical substances or causing a nuisance) before or whilst on-air or attending 成人论坛 premises; (iv) cancel the award, at any stage, if in its opinion it is deemed necessary or if circumstances arise out of its control. In this event, a notice will be posted on the 成人论坛 Radio Scotland website – /youngtrad
26. The 成人论坛 and Hands Up for Trad, their sub-contractors, subsidiaries and/or agencies cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any other problem with any server, internet access, system, the post or otherwise which may result in any entry being lost or not properly registered or recorded. Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.
27. These Terms and Conditions are governed by the law of England and Wales.
