REVOLUTION
George Bernard Shaw said that 鈥渞evolutions have never lightened the burden of tyranny: they have only shifted it to another shoulder鈥� and the French Revolution with its guillotines, The Terror and finally Napoleon would seem to give the argument strength 鈥� as would Stalin in Russian.聽 But are we doing revolution a disservice?聽 Is it outsiders and counter-revolutionaries that cause all the problems? Laurie Taylor talks to Mike Haynes, the author of a new study which claims that revolutions are a useful and inevitable engine of social progress and to David Wootton, Professor of History at the University of York.聽 The English Revolution brought parliamentary sovereignty and the French revolution lead 鈥� eventually 鈥� to the abolition of slavery.聽 Are revolutions violent and abhorrent or glorious and misunderstood?
