In the final programme of the series, Jim McColl and the team batten down the hatches for winter and look forward to spring.
Marek Mozoloski has developed his own heat pump for his greenhouse, and he emailed Jim to tell him about it. Jim invites Marek to join him in the garden and to share his secrets and set up a pump for Beechgrove. Jim and Marek devise a trial with side-by-side greenhouses to see what costs and energy the new pump can save.
Jim and Lesley Watson then set about filling the wee greenhouses with overwintering plants. Jim waits in the warm greenhouse to show how to store gladioli bulbs and dahlias, and how to prepare begonia tubers for winter, after Lesley has shown how to collect them from the garden.
Lesley also looks forward to Christmas, preparing hyacinth bulbs for a wonderful, fragrant display in December.
Carole Baxter is at Cambo House Gardens in Fife. The garden is best-known for its early drifts of snowdrops, but it is stunning in late summer too. Head gardener Elliot Forsyth maintains that this is when Cambo is at its flowering peak, and gives Carole hints on creating the perfect late summer garden colour.
