Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
In the feature Baby What A Big Surprise [they really were Number One albums] we hear California Here I Come, from Al Jolson's Songs He Made Famous, and Old Man from Neil Young's Harvest - the first album by a Canadian artist to top the US album chart.
In the regular feature The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face songs are featured from the debut hit LPs by George Michael (Faith) and Kris Kristofferson (The Silver-Haired Devil And I). It's Not The Same Old Song highlights Vacation by Connie Francis and a different song with the same title by The Go-Gos.
In A Matter Of Life And Death Paul celebrates the birth on this date in 1942 of Al Jardine of the Beach Boys and pays tribute to the recently deceased lyricist and producer Jerry Leiber. Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers and Uncloudy Day by the Staple Singers are featured in the weekly presentation of two songs from the Grammy Hall Of Fame of Singles.
Our R&B Number Ones are from 1982 - Jump To It by Aretha Franklin - and this week - So In Love by Jill Scott & Anthony Hamilton. We hear Country Number Ones from 1998 and now by Jo Dee Messina and The Band Perry. This week's past and present Rock Number Ones are by John Cougar Mellencamp and Red Hot Chili Peppers. On the singles side, She Will by Lil Wayne featuring Drake is Number One.
