Elvis Presley: Aloha From Hawaii

Johnnie's guest is Simon Nicol from enduring folk collective Fairport Convention. Plus he features tracks from the live album 'Elvis Presley: Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite'.

Johnnie Walker re-visits the decade of sequins, strikes and Saturday Night Fever.

This week his guest is Simon Nicol, guitarist, singer and founder member of British folk-rock scene-setters, Fairport Convention. Simon looks back to the end of the Richard Thompson era in the band, recalls when he left to record with folk luminaries John Martyn and Al Stewart in the 1970's and how he re-joined in time for their 'farewell' tour at the first ever Croperdy Festival in 1979. Since then the annual gig has become a music festival institution, and it never did see off Fairport Convention, who have now been performing for over 45 years.

Also, in our new 'I Was There' feature, Johnnie takes his pick of Elvis Presley's Live LPs of the 1970's and chooses 'Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite' from 1973. The concert was aired to 40 countries via satellite, costing a record amount for a live broadcast. Johnnie tells the story of the concert and it's broadcast and takes his pick of the tracks on the resulting live soundtrack.
