Paul Gambaccini blends digital tracks from the week's US charts of songs, albums, R&B, country and rock hits with LP and singles tracks from the last six decades.
Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.
Each week, songs are played connected to members of 'The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame'. We play a track from one of the inductees from this year's ceremony - 'Born In Chicago' by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Resuming alphabetical order, Paul celebrates the induction of Dion by playing 'Runaround Sue'. In 'A Matter Of Life And Death', we celebrate the birthday on this date in 1924 of Theodore Bikel by featuring his performance of 'Edelweis' from the Original Broadway Cast recording of 'The Sound Of Music'. Paul pays tribute to Percy Sledge, who has recently died. We hear the 1968 American R&B number one 'Take Time To Know Her'. 'It's Not The Same Old Song' highlights 'Run, Run, Run' by The Third Rail and a different song with the same title by Jo Jo Gunne.
In the feature called 'Beyond The Sea', Paul plays tracks from the biggest selling albums by UK artists in America. Tonight, we hear tracks from LPs by David Rose and Susan Boyle. 'The Other Number Ones' are records that reached the top of the American chart in 'Cash Box' magazine, but not in the 'Billboard' Hot 100. This week's examples are by The 4 Seasons and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Our R&B number ones are from 1978 and now by Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams and Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars. We hear Country number ones from 1982 and this week by Willie Nelson and Little Big Town. Our featured past and present Rock number ones are by Simple Minds and Walk The Moon. The week's best selling album is 'Handwritten' by Shawn Mendes and the number one digital song for a third week is 'See You Again' by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth.
