Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, vicar in Milton Keynes:

My little girl came home from school beaming the other day. She’s been learning the violin for just over a year, and that day she’d been ‘promoted’ in the school orchestra, and from now on will be sitting with the second violins - quite literally playing ‘second fiddle’.

For her that’s a triumph and I couldn’t be more proud. But ‘playing second fiddle’ is usually a cause for complaint isn’t it, an utterance of disgruntlement and entitlement, bristling with resentment that strikes a note every bit as discordant as a youngster inexpertly scraping a bow over cat gut strings.

I’ve felt it myself, that annoyance at taking a back seat, or at least one a few rows behind, while someone else gets all the glory. But two things this week have challenged me on this. One event was the sad death of Sir George Martin, the man who introduced the Beatles to the world. Sir George was a man of extraordinary capabilities - and yet the thing for which we’ve praised him the most this week is putting four young men on the road to their own success. The other challenge came via a piece written by Lauren Laverne, about a seemingly insignificant young man serving in a coffee shop, who made her day, and improved the days of many others, simply by his friendly smile. She wrote: ‘he always sent us on our way feeling slightly better than when we arrived.’

It strikes me that although this man isn’t a superstar or a superhero, simply by putting other people’s needs first, he makes the world a better place.
There’s no shame in supporting others, whether we’re at the top of a glittering career or putting in foot-slogging hours un-noticed. You may have heard of the prayer of St Francis, which includes the lines ‘Grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love with all my soul - for it is in giving that we receive.’ First, second or third fiddle - wherever we find ourselves we can make music. Doing what we do, faithfully, good-naturedly, to the best of our ability, can make differences to people we could never imagine.
