Chris' Pause For Thought: Sharon Grenham-Thompson
From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Thompson, vicar in Milton Keynes:
7 years ago I sat in a doctor’s office and burst into tears, as the consultant confirmed that my 5 year old son was on the autistic spectrum - diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.
Those tears were a mixture of relief and grief. Relief because at last there was a ‘reason’ for the characteristics which had so puzzled and distressed us. Grief because I thought my boy was destined to a life of being considered odd, a geeky outsider with no friends, someone who would always find the world a confusing and overwhelming place.
Well, all these years on, Leo is a kind, clever, funny, thoughtful, mature young man. He has particular interests, as well as certain challenges, and there’s no doubt he experiences the world differently to me, and to many others around him. It can be hard for him to fit in with his peers, and sometimes the world is indeed a confusing and overwhelming place. But he and I have come to see his difference as an asset - his take on the world challenges my own pre-conceptions.
Autism manifests itself in a wide variety of ways - that’s why it’s referred to as a spectrum. My son doesn’t have to struggle with physical difficulties, where others do. Some may not be able to speak, or they might suffer from deep anxiety. Another young man I know, Murray, wrote this week ‘people who don’t know me and just see my autism assume I am stupid, but I have the mind of a blossoming tree that has just been planted.’
I believe if we can learn to move away from what I call a ‘deficit model’ when we deal with people, you know, away from seeing only what they can’t do, then all our lives could be so much richer. After all, when people are introducing me, I wouldn’t want them to say ‘This is Sharon, she’s scared of heights, hates peas and is rubbish at sport!’
Learning to understand and accept people with autism transcends faith and culture, although when it’s been tough my faith has helped me. I’ve often remembered the words of Jesus reported in the Gospel of John - that we should have life in all its fullness. That’s my hope for my son, and for us all.Â
