Episode 2
Susan Morrison explores the life of controversial Scottish independence activist Wendy Wood and delves into her roots in the politics of the 1920s and 30s.
Wendy Wood was one of the most famous direct-action activists for Scottish independence from the 1930s to the 1980s. She was famed for her political stunts ranging from flag-snatching to hunger strikes but how did she come to dedicate her life to campaigning? She was born Gwendoline Emily Meacham in 1892 in Kent, spent her childhood in South Africa and wanted to be an artist. But then she married and for any woman before World War I, that could nip an exciting career in the bud. She tried again with broadcasting and then her marriage went under... Susan Morrison sheds new light on one of Scotland's most colourful and controversial characters with Wendy's biographer Rowena Love, history professors Murray Pittock and Richard Finlay and author and lecturer Dr Gavin Bowd.
