Postpartum psychosis
Kayley Thomas hears a woman's story of her experience with postpartum psychosis and her road to recovery.
" I felt like I had died and I was living in an afterlife because I had hurt Ella"
What happens if after giving birth, the way you see reality is completely different? 1 in 500 to 1000 women who give birth suffer from a devastating illness called postpartum psychosis. The very act of childbirth triggers a shift in how reality is perceived. Although it is rare, the consequence of not treating this illness can be suicide.
Sally Wilson lives in North Wales. In 2015 she gave birth to her daughter Ella. Five days after the birth, Sally suffered from a psychotic episode. She believed she'd killed her baby and was now living in an afterlife. In this programme, Sally, her husband Jamie, and some members of her care team, tell the story of her illness and her year-long road to recovery.
