John Otway shares his memories of how a raucous performance on the Old Grey Whistle Test kick-started his career during the 70s.

John Otway shares his memories of how a raucous performance on the Old Grey Whistle Test kick started his career during the 70s.

By the time of the legendary performance, Otway had already released five singles to muted interest, but his life changed forever when he jumped on an amplifier during a performance of Bob Lind's Cheryl's Going Home, misjudged the leap and sent Wild Willy Barrett's amplifier tumbling as he crashed down straddling the box under the amp. After the show, Otway was the talk of nation and sales of Otway's sixth single, the half-spoken love song Really Free increased dramatically and reached number 27 in the UK Singles Chart. After an appearance on the 成人论坛's flagship music programme Top of the Pops, where Otway & Barrett were introduced by Elton John later, Otway was finally a star.

Also on the show, Johnnie will delve into the 成人论坛 archive to unearth what was happening this week in music in the 70s, and another classic seven-inch single will be added to Johnnie's Jukebox.
