Renowned choreographer Anthony Van Laast shares his stories of the 1970s and of working with some of the biggest artists of the decade.

Anthony Van Laast is a world-renowned choreographer. He has worked for stage on London's West End and Broadway as well as for television and in film. As a teenager, Anthony trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance - joining as a dancer and ultimately becoming active as both an actor and choreographer. In 1979, he left the company to pursue a career as a freelance choreographer and teacher. He began working in pop music, including working with Kate Bush on The Tour of Life. He appeared in the music videos for Kate's Hammer Horror and The Wedding List. Among his prominent stage works as a choreographer are the musicals Song & Dance (1982, West End), Annie Get Your Gun (1986, West End), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1993), Mamma Mia! (2001), Bombay Dreams (2004), Sister Act (2009 in the West End and 2011 in Broadway) and Tina - The Tina Turner Musical (2018-, West End). For his work on the musical Hair (Old Vic) and for The Beggar's Opera (the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican), he was nominated for the Olivier Award, Best Theatre Choreographer in 1994 He co-directed and choreographed EFX, the Las Vegas stage show at the MGM Grand starring Michael Crawford in 1995. Anthony was awarded the MBE for Services to Dance and Choreography in 1999. His television and film work includes the concert Sarah Brightman: Symphony in Vienna (2008), Jesus Christ Superstar (Emmy award), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010) and Mamma Mia! His most current work can be seen in cinemas at the moment in the film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
