Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason chats to Johnnie about his memories of the 1970's, his time with Pink Floyd and his new project, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets

Nicholas Berkeley Mason was born 27 January 1944 in Edgebaston in Birmingham but was brought up in Hampstead, North London. He’s best known as a founder member of Pink Floyd and studied architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic in London, from 1962–1967.

Nick is the only Pink Floyd member to be featured on every one of Pink Floyd’s albums, and the only constant member of the band since the band began in 1965. It is estimated that the group have sold over 250 million records worldwide.

Despite solely writing only a few Pink Floyd songs, Nick has co-written some of Pink Floyd's most popular tracks such as ‘Echoes’ from the ‘Meddle’ album and ‘Time’ which features on ‘Dark Side of the Moon’. He is also responsible for the spoken vocal on the track, ‘One of These Days’.

Nick has also been producer for other artists including The Damned (1977) Robert Wyatt (1974) Steve Hillage (1978) and Gong (1976).

He has also had a solo career and recently reissued his solo albums, which he originally released in the 1980’s.

Nick is a keen car enthusiast and has an impressive collection of performance cars. He owns an extremely rare Ferrari 250 GTO, which is one of only 39 built and valued at many millions of pounds.

In April 2018, Nick launched his new venture, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ with David Gilmour’s bassist Guy Pratt, Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp, Blockheads guitarist Lee Harris and Dom Beken. The band will tour Pink Floyd’s early material, from 1967-72, beginning in Portsmouth on the 23rd of September.
