Paul Dunmall
Paul Dunmall’s Sun Ship Quartet plus Alan Skidmore
Soweto Kinch presents Paul Dunmall’s Sun Ship Quartet with special guest Alan Skidmore from the 2018 Herts Jazz Festival.
Al Ryan talks to film historian Helen Wheatley about the newly discovered broadcast of Duke Ellington’s First Sacred Concert, recorded in Coventry Cathedral in 1966, where the restored film will be shown again for the first time in 62 years on 29 December, including a number specially written for Coventry and only ever performed there this one time by the Ellington Orchestra.
And there's a chance to hear a panel discussion hosted by Soweto, looking at discrimination in jazz, with composer Issie Baratt, saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, Jazz Re:freshed's Justin McKenzie and NYJO's Nigel Tully.

Soweto Kinch is joined for a round table discussion on some aspects of today’s jazz scene – particularly questions relating to the kind of talent that gets you public attention, and also concerning the diversity of today’s UK jazz scene. His guests are Issie Barratt – one of Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour Power list – who’s a musician and composer who’s not only heavily involved in jazz education but leads the all-female band Interchange; another guest is alto saxophonist and composer Cassie Kinoshi who has been part of the band Nerija and leads her own ensemble Seed. Alongside them are Nigel Tully, who’s been head of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra throughout the present decade and Justin McKenzie who is the creative director of Jazz Re:Freshed.
