Episode 6

Two architects compete using virtual reality to win a commission to remodel a home in St Albans. Will the finished build solve the very different needs of the family who live there?

Imagine you are standing in your house - suddenly the home-makeover of your wildest dreams takes place. Once-dark corners are flooded with light, a tired kitchen is suddenly tailor-made for your family and a breathtaking picture window finally connects you to the world beyond. You don鈥檛 just have a new home, you have a whole new way of living 鈥 all without opening a can of paint or touching a single brick.

Angela Scanlon presents a property makeover series like no other. This series allows homeowners to see ingenious new plans for their homes in an instant. Cutting-edge virtual reality and visual effects enable people to see what the future of their home could look like, before building it in reality.

Homeowners can instantly experience how bravely flipping bedrooms and living areas in a two-storey house could transform the way they live, or how radically ripping out a ceiling can turn a boring lounge into a show-stopping sitting room. In each episode, a family is presented with two radically different designs by two extraordinary architects. Having experienced both designs virtually, the homeowners must then decide which vision to construct in real life.

Helen and Rob live in a Victorian terraced house in St Albans. When they bought it five years ago, it needed a lot of work. They have put all their energy into renovating the entrance and the front room, but the back of the house remains a mishmash of tiny and unpractical rooms. A narrow kitchen is uncomfortably close to the only family bathroom, and a dark, windowless utility space has Helen comparing the rear of her home to a dungeon.

The problems don鈥檛 just stop with the house. Helen and Rob have very different needs. Rob is much taller than Helen and wants high ceilings and open spaces, whereas Helen is desperate for cosy intimate spaces.

With a seemingly impossible brief, architects Robert Jamison and Laura Jane Clark are competing to take control of this renovation project. Robert is hoping his unconventional approach to design and global influences will give him the edge, but he mustn鈥檛 underestimate his opponent. Laura鈥檚 speciality is creatively reimagining homes so they perfectly fit the needs of their owners and she鈥檚 got her heart set on winning this project.

Each architect interprets the project in wildly different ways and pitches their vision to Helen and Rob using virtual reality. Robert uses influences from Japanese architecture to draw light into the centre of the terraced home, while offering Helen the separation she hankers after and also answering Rob鈥檚 desire for open spaces, a conundrum that no one thought could be solved. Meanwhile, Laura strips out the back of the house completely and offers a solution that wows both Helen and Rob. Once they were stuck unable to find a solution, now they have two great but very different designs. How can they possibly decide which to go with?

Having experienced both ideas in virtual reality, there is one final reveal yet to come: what Helen and Rob choose to build in real life. When Angela and the winning architect arrive at the home they discover the once terrible layout has been transformed in the most spectacular way, even more amazing than the one in virtual reality. But Angela and the architect also discover a change more significant than a home renovation. Both Helen and Rob are finally comfortable in their own home, having found the perfect balance between their two contrasting needs.
