The Killeen Family

Kim and Alex have called in Gregg Wallace and Chris Bavin to help get their parents' diets back on track after an emotionally tough year of family difficulties.

Gregg and Chris are in Bromsgrove with the Killeens. This call for help is a bit different, as it is Karen and John’s grown-up children, Kim and Alex, who got in touch. After a tough year caring for Karen’s elderly mother and dealing with the loss of John’s brother, the couple’s diets have taken a back seat. Surviving on sweet treats, snacks, takeaways and eating out means healthy eating has gone out the window. Cooking from scratch has fallen by the wayside and convenient readymade sauces are their go-to when they do venture into the kitchen. Alex and Kim may have flown the nest, but they remain concerned for their parents’ health, and in a last bid attempt to get them to change their ways, they have called for backup. Gregg and Chris have come to help get John and Karen back into the habit of cooking nutritious meals to improve their health and save for their retirement.

Gregg wants to prove to Karen that she doesn’t need a jar of cooking sauce to make a delicious dish, and Chris shows John he can get the takeaway flavours he loves without leaving the house. Chris finds out about high cholesterol and what we should and shouldn’t eat in order to manage it, whilst Gregg has an easy cookie recipe that’s lower in saturated fat.

With the younger generation demanding more meat-free options, Chris visits a factory that supplies schools and colleges across the UK with vegan lunch options. A group of catering students put five different pestos through their paces to find out which they think is the tastiest.

Will Gregg and Chris convince the Killeens that cooking from scratch is easier and tastier than their usual takeaways?
