Michael Doran opens up a selection of classical music from a percussionist鈥檚 point of view - revealing familiar and unfamiliar works in a new light.
Mick Doran鈥檚 many years as principal percussionist at English National Opera have given him a unique view of the musical world, whether he鈥檚 down in the opera house orchestra pit, teetering offstage on a ladder, or quietly absorbing the music while counting bars rest.
Today Mick鈥檚 musical choices range from the crystal-clear diction of Dennis Noble singing Rossini in English, to the spot-on ensemble of Count Basie鈥檚 big band. He also shows how Prokofiev understood the true power of the side drum, and talks about the profound effect Dvorak鈥檚 Eighth Symphony had on him when he was being treated for a life-threatening illness.
