Breaking the Mould

Episode 2 of 10

To mark Black History Month, Mimi learns about Nigerian fashion, meets violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason, and her friend Kolade takes her along for a lesson at Ballet Black.

For Black History Month, Mimi explores her African roots and celebrates diversity, progress and people paving the way for future generations.

Mimi's good friend Kolade invites her along to her first ballet lesson at Ballet Black, where classically trained dancer Alexander Fadayiro teaches them some beautiful moves, and they explore how ballet is becoming a more inclusive hobby, changing from the exclusively white space it has been in the past.

Mimi鈥檚 mum Beatrice and auntie Ola demonstrate the tying of a fabulous Gele headdress, and Mimi also introduces seven-year-old Ava, who took part in this year鈥檚 Pride celebrations with her two mums and is the first female drummer in her school.

Finally, Mimi meets Braimah Kanneh-Mason, a phenomenal violinist and Royal Academy of Music scholar who is as passionate about Beethoven as he is about Bob Marley. He shares his upcoming album, which he composed and performed with his six incredible siblings.
