American swimmer Katie Ledecky had the first of her potential five golds in her sights, while Jonny Brownlee and Alex Yee were bidding for a third consecutive British gold in the men’s triathlon.

Medals were also decided in a host of sports including gymnastics, taekwondo and skateboarding, and there were pool games in hockey and rugby sevens.
