Novelist, poet and former Scots Makar Jackie Kay shares her passion for jazz music in an extended interview with Seonaid Aitken exploring the connections between jazz and poetry. Growing up in Glasgow, Jackie discovered blues singer Bessie Smith, an artist she closely identified with, and who is now the subject matter of her latest book ‘Bessie Smith’ which mixes biography with fiction, poetry and prose. Plus staying with the world of writers, Richard Michael looks at the influence of William Shakespeare on jazz artists including Duke Ellington, Cleo Laine and Count Basie. Plus music from John Coltrane, Janis Joplin, Joseph Malik & Gil Scott-Heron.
