Adventures on Deeside, Fascinating Plants and a Big Cairngorm Weekend

Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith with stories from the great outdoors.

Mark heads out on a wildlife watching experience on Deeside with Rachael and Dan Brown. Together they run Wild Discovery, providing tours with conservation and sustainability in mind. They are both avid naturalists and professional ecologists to trade and before the pandemic, they were used to travelling around the world. But recently they鈥檝e had to change their focus back to their local area in Deeside and rediscovered their love for Scotland鈥檚 wildlife.

Wednesday 18th May is the sixth international Fascination of Plants Day. The goal of the day is straightforward, to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants! Helen finds out about the events happening in Aberdeen, as well as what interesting developments are happening in the plant science world.

And this weekend is the first Cairngorms Big Nature Weekend to be held with in person events for three years. We chat live to Dr Sarah Henshall, head of conservation at the park to find out what events are happening.

It鈥檚 Mental Health Awareness Week which is always a reminder to us all to take a moment to think of our own mental wellbeing. New research from the Outward Bound Trust has found that, post pandemic, the mental wellbeing of youngsters in the UK is worryingly low. Helen finds out how spending time in nature can improve this.

We hear an excerpt of this week鈥檚 Scotland Outdoors podcast which features highlights of the International Dawn Chorus Day broadcast from the start of the month.

Euan tells the tale of the heather pixie and how the plant comes to change colour through the year.

And there鈥檚 another mystery bird- can you identify it just from its call?
