Theatrical Clown

Episode 2 of 30

Nigel Havers presides as five sellers aim to get the best price for their items, including a dressing screen, a coracle, a toy steam engine, a car mascot and a theatrical prop clown.

Nigel Havers welcomes sellers of collectibles and curiosities to the Bidding Room's new home in Edinburgh, where they ply their wares to five dealers.

First through the doors is Nicola with an auction purchase that, on receipt, just didn’t fit the bill. She’s brought her Victorian decoupage dressing screen to the dealers in the hope of finding the right home for it – but she’s ready to drive up the bids with the hidden social history imprinted into the fabric of the piece.

Next in is Andrew with his loyal companion Bella. Their folding coracle boat has been unused for many years, and now it’s time to move it upstream and into the Bidding Room. Andrew is hoping to secure a watertight deal - with a little help from his four-legged friend.

Third into the Bidding Room is Lisa. She has brought a toy steam engine that has been packed in the loft for decades. Simon is impressed with the mint condition piece, and Lisa is hoping toy lover Adi will jump at it. But will he, or any of the other dealers, offer her enough to part with the family heirloom?

Geoff is next to arrive, with a mountable mascot fit for any four-wheeled machine. With plans to donate his profits to charity, he needs to get the dealers into gear and drive the bids up.

And finally, it’s Maggie. She is relocating, so the time has come to say goodbye to a treasured theatrical prop that has been a conversation starter in her home for seven years. The life-size clown puts a smile on Nigel and Simon’s faces, but will it be quite as popular amongst the dealers?

The dealers today are Ian, Jacqui, Adi, Jo and James.
