From floating in a pond in Vermont to slipping between space and the sky, five audio-makers offer a series of Radio 3's innovative Between the Ears features in miniature inspired by the elements.
Our second edition takes earth as its starting point, produced by Talia Augustidis.
Can a fictional mushroom help a daughter seek revenge?
In Akira Kawasaki's short film Oyashirazu (Wisdom Teeth), the protagonist, Toko, lives under the suffocating control of her obsessive father, who strives to keep her skin perfect. One day, a mushroom sprouts from her forehead, triggering a rebellion within Toko, who runs away. The film enacts a personal rebellion for Akira too, who incorporates semi-autobiographical elements from her own strained relationship with her father. Unlike Toko, however, Akira's rebellion is not an escape, but rather a confrontation, as she casts her father in the very role that he inspired.
