Black History Month: Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and Iconic Black Folk Albums
Anna marks Black History Month featuring some iconic Black folk albums, and Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne on his new project discovering the shared musical histories of his ancestors.
After the seeds were sown nearly 20 years ago on a holiday visiting family in Barbados, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne has been fascinated with the shared repertoire that exists between the English musical traditions and the musical traditions of the Caribbean and Black America. His new album PLAY UP THE MUSIC! has been a labour of love, exploring the songs and tunes that started their life in England but have entered the musical traditions of the Caribbean and Black America over several centuries. The songs have been adopted and preserved by Black singers in the Americas, infusing them with something of their own personal musical language and creating unique versions of these songs, quite different to their English antecedents. Cohen joins Anna to chat about the album and, of course, PLAY UP THE MUSIC!
And, in lieu of this month's Official Folk Album Chart, we celebrate some Iconic Black Folk Albums - including records from Rhiannon Giddens, Angeline Morrison, Afro Celt Sound System and more.
