Pre-flight chicks

It is early May and a tawny owl nest is surprisingly quiet as only the youngest member of the family remains, yet to fledge. The rest are exploring the world outside. Branch hopping is an essential prelude to flying, as is the ability to climb if you fall out of your tree, so young tawny owls are experts at both. The parents watch as a young owl successfully makes its first leap for independence, but the ground is not a safe place. While woodland offers plenty of protection, out in the open field an owlet with no experience is at risk from tractors and foxes.
