Curiosity kills
The linnet's eggs start to hatch. She removes the discarded eggshell of the first to hatch, and eats bits of shell to recover the calcium. Then things take an unexpected turn. The male returns and feeds the female. But, when she nips off for a break, he grabs the chick and carries it off. When the next egg hatches Kate and Chris are on tenterhooks waiting to see what would happen. Again the male grabs the chick when the female is away, but this time he drops it back in the nest and flies off. Later he is feeding the female again. Chris thinks it might just be misplaced curiousity - he may never have seen a chick before. The female also seems inexperienced.
