Lots of species sing at night, especially in the towns and suburbs, but the nightingale is not one of them. They are summer visitors to Britain that arrive in late April and sing for only five or six weeks. Then they go quiet and leave by August. They don't sing on rooftops or by the light of streetlamps and they certainly wouldn't sing in Berkley Square, mainly because they don't live in cities. Nightingales prefer to live in scrubby, almost heathland-type woods and bushy trees, and even then they only live in a line that runs below South Wales and the Wash. They tend to sing from deep cover and if you manage to catch a glimpse of one, it's easy to be disappointed by this small, inconspicous brown bird. At least his song makes up for his lack of bright plumage.
