The small pond behind Kate Humble is actually a pingo, a remnant of the ice age, where a small spring under the ice forced the soil into a small mound which subsequently froze. As the ice retreated and the area melted again the soil mound imploded in on itself and caused a small depression which has now filled with water. This small pingo in Pensthorpe is home to some of Britain鈥檚 protected amphibians, great crested newts. Looking almost prehistoric, they have white spots on their chin and thorax and an orange belly. The orange bar at the base of the tail signifies that the one Kate is holding is a female. The male has a crest during the breeding season, but once this has passed the crest and extra width in the tail is reabsorbed.
