Slavonian courtship
Stuart Benn works for the RSPB as a senior conservation officer looking after the Loch Ruthven Reserve in Scotland. The real jewel here in the spring and summer is the Slavonian grebe. There are 20 of the national population of 40 pairs breeding here. There are roughly 12 golden eagles for every Slavonian grebe - which makes them very rare visitors to Scotland. The grebes perform a penguin dance for courtship, where they pick up bits of weed in their beaks and swim in parallel with each other, then stand up in the water, bellies facing each other. Once a bond has been formed they will continue to swim close to one another. Any visitor to loch Ruthven between March and September can't fail to see a Slavonian grebe.
