Doting dad
Two new osprey chicks get their first meals.
An excited female osprey is calling a lot and standing over the nest. It's difficult to see from the camera position what has happened to the eggs, but as the male flies in, bringing food with him, and the female begins to tear up the food into smaller, bite sized pieces, the heads of two newly hatched chicks appear and it鈥檚 clear what all the excitement was about. Tiny in size, they are not much bigger than their mother's foot and seem in a perilous position, but these huge birds can be amazingly delicate when it comes to raising their chicks. These are some of the first meals these young chicks have eaten. There鈥檚 a marked change in attitude from the male bird now that the chicks are hatched. He brings in food in the mornings, the female nags him a little bit and he reacts by bringing more food throughout the day. It is now his responsibility to feed the whole family, a relatively easy task at this early stage, but as the chicks grow, so do their appetites. At the moment, he is rising to the challenge, even helping to feed the chicks himself, though it seems to annoy the female.
