Dead wood
One of the excellent things about Hampstead Heath is that the Corporation of London who manage it do know a lot about wildlife. And they chop trees down sometimes, since they have to - but they leave them there. That is brilliant for fungi because if there鈥檚 one basic rule about looking for fungi it鈥檚 try and find dead trees, especially lying on the ground, logs and stuff like that. If they鈥檝e been there a long time they will be covered in fungi, almost bound to be. People are always asking which are edible and which aren鈥檛, and they sometimes think mushrooms, edible, toadstools not. That鈥檚 complete nonsense, some of them can make you very, very ill, some of them can actually kill you. Bill suggests that just like any other wildlife, you just watch them.
