Scan across the Brecks and the one animal you can absolutely guarantee seeing - rabbits and more rabbits. Bill Oddie doesn't think he's ever seen so many rabbits. We take rabbits a bit for granted, because they鈥檙e very cute. But it鈥檚 almost like we don鈥檛 think of them as wildlife. And of course originally, as it happens, they weren鈥檛! The first rabbits appeared here in the Brecks in the 13th century and they鈥檙e not native Brits: they were brought over from the Mediterranean, mainly for food and clothing. In fact, many of the place names round here are something Warren - they were rabbit farms. This time of the year it is very peaceful and there isn鈥檛 much action going on in the rabbit warren because there are hardly any males around. All the young bucks, probably the troublemakers, are off looking for new groups, so this is a serene, female society. I suppose they鈥檙e just chilling out. That鈥檚 clever - independent ear movements, one forward and one back.
