People's Palaces: The Building of Manchester Town Hall
The rapid expansion of Manchester from small market town to teeming industrial metropolis meant that its cramped Town Hall needed replacing. An awkward, triangular site was identified to house the building and a competition announced to choose a design. Presenter Jonathan Foyle introduces the gothic designs that competed to become as synonymous with Manchester as Alfred Waterhouse鈥檚 has come to be over the last 150 years.
