Raising a family

Emperor penguin colonies are often quite a distance from the ice edge. But by summer - as the ice begins to melt - the sea comes ever closer to the colony, and the young penguins have a shorter distance to travel to take their first swim. Returning adults, full of fish, call and search for the chick they left behind. Once found, the plainitive cries of their young prompts the adult to regurgitate the fish for them. As one adult returns, the other can now go to the sea to feed for itself. Yet danger still lurks at the ice edge, so they must be careful when entering the water.
