The Golden Age of Canals narrated by Gina McKee

Barry Argent comes from a long line of canal people. His parents worked on the Midlands canals before the war and as well as working with canals Barry's father, Ike, filmed life on the cut. Barry has inherited his father's films and his enthusiasm for the inland waterways and is currently restoring a 60-foot narrowboat which he had to cut into two to squeeze into the garden of his ex-Council house alongside the Erewash canal in Nottinghamshire.

The Golden Age of Canals tells the untold story of the way in which a band of volunteers rescued one of Britain's icons of the industrial age, its network of narrow canals. Remarkably many of them filmed their campaigns, their successful attempts to restore long forgotten and in many cases destroyed waterways and a few even filmed the last days of working boat traffic on the cut.
