Alastair Francis Buchan, the Montague Burton Professor of International Relations for Oxford University, explores the political agendas of Asia in his fourth Reith lecture. Speaking from his series entitled 'Change without War', he reflects on Asian international relations.

In this lecture entitled 'The Asian Quadrilateral', Professor Alastair Buchan explores the Sino-Soviet relationships between the heavy artillery power of the Soviet Union and China and the relatively unarmed economic power of Japan. He argues that the matted tangle of geo-political considerations, ideological differences and ethnic hostility has caused a long standing historical distrust between the countries. Does this mutual hostility of the two communist powers advance or protect the interests of the West? And what is the diplomatic power of Japan?
