Critique of Connoisseurship

Edgar Wind considers how to spot a charlatan when dealing with art connoisseurs in his third Reith lecture entitled 'Critique of Connoisseurship'.

This year's lecturer is the first and current Professor of Art History at Oxford University, Edgar Wind. The German-born British professor specialises in iconology in the Renaissance era. In his Reith Series entitled 'Art and Anarchy', Edgar Wind explores the concepts of creative energies produced through turmoil.

In this lecture entitled 'Critique of Connoisseurship', Edgar Wind considers those skilful masters of virtuous taste; art connoisseurs. Exploring the key roles that experts can play in making or breaking an artist or a piece of art, he asks what the difference is between an art connoisseur and a charlatan.
