Austerity vs Growth

Should you spend your way out of a crisis, or tighten your belt? European elections have brought the debate to a head. But who's going to win it? We seek an answer with a game of snakes and ladders.

Is it best to spend your way out of a financial crisis, or tighten your belt? In the wake of the Greek and the French elections, some reckon europe's great economic dilemma could be coming to a head. But who's going to win that argument? We seek answers here in the Business Daily studio from a series of economists - from Professor Iain Begg of the London School of Economics, Lena Komileva of G-Plus Economics, Sony Kapoor of the Brussels think-tank Redefine, and Stephanie Blankenburg from the School of African and Oriental Studies. We also ask our diplomatic and economics correspondents, James Robbins and Stephanie Flanders, which view is likeliest to prevail. And we try to make sense of it all in the Business Daily Studio with a fiercely competitive game of Snakes and Ladders.
