The Angara River (pt 1/2)

The Angara River starts from a huge freshwater lake in Siberia, Central Asia, called Lake Baikal. This is the largest lake in the world and it holds one fifth of the world's fresh water.

The winters are long and extremely cold. The forests in Siberia are the largest in the world and provide wood for building houses and fuel for heating. Lake Baikal is home to nearly 3,000 different types of animals and plants. About two thirds of these species are not found anywhere else in the world.

From the surrounding hills, 336 rivers flow into Lake Baikal. Only the mighty Angara flows out of the lake. It joins the River Yenisei and travels nearly 4,000km to the Arctic Ocean.
